Students Recognized at Spring 2010 Commencement

Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award
Five College of Education students were recognized as recipients of the college's Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award during Spring 2010 Commencement.

Lauren Bauman, elementary education, Neodesha, College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Bauman was president of Sigma Kappa sorority and was selected as her sorority’s 2006 Sophomore Member of the Year. Bauman was also involved with the Leadership Studies Building dedication planning team; was a member of K-State Singers musical ensemble; and was a member of Mortar Board, K-State’s senior honor society. She was also honored as the 2009 Royal Purple Yearbook Queen.

Benjamin Cook, secondary education, Abilene, College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. With an emphasis of study in chemistry, Cook was involved with many scientific endeavors during his time at K-State including being a presenter at the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science Camp and serving as the superintendent of aerospace and robotics at the Central Kansas Free Fair.

Molly Hamm, secondary education, Shawnee, College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. An active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Hamm served as the director of community and internal relations on K-State’s Panhellenic Council. Hamm also served as president of the K-State Student Foundation; was a member of the Student Governing Association; and was a member of Mortar Board. In addition, Hamm was honored as the recipient of the K-State Proud Hero Award, the 2009-2010 Campus Compact Frank Newman Leadership Award and the 2010 Dean of Student Life Outstanding Graduating Senior Award. She was a national finalist for the Truman Scholarship.

Pedro Miller, elementary education, Shawnee, College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. While at K-State, Miller served on the College of Education’s Teacher Education Advisory Council and was as an ambassador to the college. He was also a member of the Bilingual Education Student Organization where he served as fundraising chair, and served both as vice president and president of the Smith Scholarship House on campus.

Allison Morton, secondary education, Wamego, College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award and Outstanding Future Teacher Award for Secondary Education. Among her numerous leadership experience with the College of Education, Morton served as co-chair for the college for the K-State Telefund, was selected as one the college’s students of the month and served as an ambassador to the college for three years. Morton was also actively involved with K-State’s education honorary Kappa Delta Pi and served on the honorary organizations membership committee. Morton also volunteered her time as a tutor at the Douglass Community Center and substitute taught for the Manhattan School District and the Mill Creek Valley School District. She also received her bachelors degree in Bible from Manhattan Christian College.


Outstanding Future Teacher Award
Two College of Education Students, nominated by their student teaching supervisors, were recognized as outstanding future teachers during Spring 2010 Commencement.

Cody Jack Hill, Bennington, received the Outstanding Future Teacher Award for Elementary Education.

Allison Morton, Wamego, received the Outstanding Future Teacher Award for Secondary Education.


Teachers of Promise
Three College of Education graduates honored earlier in the year as Teachers of Promise at events sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) were recognized during the 2010 Commencement.

Victoria Chaput, elementary education, Oakley, was a Fall 2010 Teacher of Promise and the Spring 2010 student commencement speaker.

Pedro Miller, Shawnee, was a Spring 2010 Elementary Teacher of Promise.

Christina Ison, Junction City, was a Spring 2010 Secondary Teacher of Promise.


Commerce Bank Presidential Award
Robert "Bobby" Gomez, Elementary Education, was recognized as one of two K-State student to receive the Commerce Bank Presidential Award for Distinguished Service in Enhancing Multiculturalism.
