Awards / Recognitions

Jeffrey Zacharakis (EDLEA-adult education) received the 2010 Humanitarian/Awareness Award from the Kansas Adult Education Association.

Ken Hughey (Chair-SECSA) was informed the department's on-line Academic Advising Certificate was recognized with the University Professional Continuing Education Association's Celebration of Excellence Award for the Central Region

Angie Messer (B.S., '93; M.S., '06; Assistant Principal at Junction City, KS, Middle School) has been recognized as the 2011 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Kansas Association of Middle School Administrators.

Bette Grauer (C&I) was awarded Best Student Paper in the Environmental Division at the Annual Conference and Exposition of the American Society for Engineering Education for, "Automobile Emissions: A Problem-Based Learning Activity Using the Clean Air Act," coauthored with Diana Grauer with collaboration by the National Gas Machinery Laboratory of the KSU College of Engineering.

Jacqueline Spears (Director, Center for Science Education-C&I) was instrumental in receiving National Science Foundation funding for a Climate Change Education Program planning grant for $979,136 over 2 years, titled "Central Great Plains Climate Change Education Partnership." Ben Champion is the PI; Co-PIs include Daniel Devlin and Charles Rice. The connection with schools is a part of the larger project, which engages farmers, commodity organizations, and other stakeholders in developing a partnership to explore climate change and possible mitigation strategies for responding to climate change.

David Allen (C&I) received an enhancement of $70,110 (total of $220,117) for Project RENEW. The additional money will be used to provide teachers with technology (40 iPads) to explore pedagogical applications for the teaching of mathematics in grades 5-8 for classroom teachers, focusing on the conceptual development of mathematical ideas.

International Activities
Trudy Salsberry (EDLEA-educational leadership), as a trained Quality Assurance Review (QAR) chair, led a QAR team this past spring to Brussels, Belgium American Elementary/High School, located in the Isles district in the Department of Defense Dependent Schools-Europe.

Jacqueline Spears (Director, Center for Science Education-C&I) and Laurie Curtis (C&I) co-lead a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad, Ethiopia for Teachers. Accompanying them was LeAnn Clark, past Education Alumni Fellow, who initiated the partnership Ethiopia Reads, a Non-Government Organization with Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad to design sustainable literacy projects and materials for Ethiopian children.

V.N. Pottroff (M.S., "09) & Kay Ann Taylor (C&I) (2010). Border Transmission and Reproduction Déjà Vu: Ukrainian External Independent Knowledge Testing: Reflections in the Mirror of U.S. Standardized Testing. The XIV World Congress of Comparative Education Societies, Istanbul, Turkey.

Marilyn Kaff (SECSA-special education) and K-State students, Nicole Maupin, Amber Olson, Melanie Hall, and Tonya Moyes carried out a special education service-learning project at the Autism Unit of the Msimbazi Mseto Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, training teachers to meet the educational needs of autistic students.

Socorro Herrera (Director of CIMA-C&I) & Linda Trujillo (C&I) spearheaded a Faculty-led Study Abroad Project for 30 students in Guatemala featuring student work in local schools and residence with parents of school children.

Charlie Nutt (Executive Director-NACADA) served as keynote speaker and workshop presenter on student retention, student persistence, academic advising, and campus-wide student success initiatives in the United Kingdom and in Japan.

NACADA hosted the 4th International Personal Tutoring/Academic Advising Conference in Atlanta with participants from the US, Canada, Japan, Wales, Scotland, and the Middle East.

Professional Service
Royce Ann Collins (EDLEA-adult education) in her role as Chair of the Executive Board for the Commission for Accelerated Programs, presided over the 2010 Annual National Conference.

Mary Devin (EDLEA-educational leadership) was selected to serve on the Kansas State Department of Education superintendent evaluation design group with representatives from ETS. Teresa Miller (EDLEA-educational leadership) was selected to serve on the principal evaluation design group. Debbie Mercer (Associate Dean) was selected to serve on the teacher evaluation design group.

Trudy Salsberry (EDLEA-educational leadership) completed a three-year term on the Board of Examiners for NCATE and was approved for a second three-year term.

David Thompson (Chair-EDLEA) was appointed as Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Finance Conference.

Teresa Miller (EDLEA-educational leadership) presented with Ron Walker, Superintendent Geary County Schools and Bob Shannon, Superintendent Manhattan/Ogden Schools, on K-12 school issues to Leadership Kansas.

Tweed Ross (Catalyst Director and EDLEA) served as a consultant to Pearson Publications for their National Education Series to evaluate test items for the Advanced System of Teacher Certification. He also serves on the editorial board of two of Master Teacher Publications (Northstar and Technology Integrators).

Warren White & Jim Teagarden (SECSA-Special Education) created and direct Project EXCELL, a regional partnership among six regional directors of special education, two adult Developmental Disabilities facility organizations, and personnel from Kansas State University to provide supplemental transition services for over 40 adults with developmental disabilities. Over 20 College of Education Student Ambassadors serve as volunteers helping with classes and serving as peer models for the students.

Mary Devin & Teresa Miller (EDLEA) co-launched a new leadership academy partnership project in Geary County and led planning for the January 2011 start of a new leadership academy in Dodge City.

David Allen (C&I) & Melisa Hancock (C&I) were cited by Wamego School District as instrumental in the district being recipients of a Distinction Award for Excellence in Mathematics by the Kansas State Board of Education.

Laurie Curtis (C&I) and the Manhattan, KS school system were featured in a Wall Street Journal article on parent-teacher conferences written by Jeffrey Zaslow, award winning journalist and author of "The Last Lecture."
